A duck race for a good cause

June 7, 2013
Lake Placid News

A flock of rubber ducks will soon be floating along on Mill Pond and down the dam on the Chubb River as the Lake Placid Rotary once again will hold its popular Dam Duck Race.

The event, which is a fundraiser for the Lake Placid Rotary Club, is slated for Saturday, June 15, and this year the Dam Duck Race will feature a new activity - and it's a great idea by the Rotary to attract more participants in a day geared to help the charitable mission of the service organization.

The first "Duck Dualie Race" will provide an athletic appeal as competitors can take part in a 1-mile run, a 10-mile bike rid and finish with a 2-mile run. So if Ironman or other marathon-type event is too much for you, give this one a go and help a good cause.

This "human" portion of the race will begin at 2 p.m. and the entry fee is $35 for an individual or $65 for a team of two. The entry fee includes the cost of a pasta dinner.

The dinner at Lisa G's is part of the day's events and begins at 5 p.m. The cost for the meal, which is all-you-can-eat is $12 for adults and $8 for those under 10.

But don't forget one of the local favorites of the day - The Dam Duck race. Taking place annually on Mill Pond behind Lisa G's, the event is fun and easy to enjoy. All you have to do is buy a "duck" ticket at $10 each or 3 for $25. Your duck is placed in the pond, along with all the other rubber ducks. At 7 p.m. on race day, the ducks float toward the dam toward the finish line. If your ducks crosses the finish line first, you win!

The grand prize for the winning duck is $1,000 and cash prizes will also be awarded for the second and third place finishers. Other ducks will be chosen at random and those winners will receive prizes donated by local merchants.

For those who don't know, the mission statement of the Rotary Club is "Service Above Self," and the local chapter schedules many events throughout the year, including the popular Trivia Nights. The club also helps support local initiatives such as providing funds to support community projects including the Thomas Shipman Youth Center, the Ecumenical Food Pantry, the Lake Placid Beautification Fund, High Peaks Hospice, the Rotary Kate Smith Scholarship and 4H Camp Overlook among others. The group has also added picnic tables and playground equipment to the Rotary Park on Dow Street and McKinley Street Park.

The Dam Duck Race is the major annual fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Lake Placid, so please find a way to take part in this event.
