KEENE VALLEY - Keene Central School's proposed 2013-14 budget passed easily Tuesday night.

The final tally was 128-37. The $5,564,347 spending plan is a 4 percent increase over the current year. It will raise the tax levy by 3.5 percent, meeting the state's property tax cap.

Ann Whitney and John Haverlick were elected to three-year terms on the Board of Education.

In a statement on the budget prior to Tuesday's vote, school board President Jim Marlatt, who will step down at the end of this year, said the school's administration "persistently evaluates educational and support functions, focused on providing an enhanced educational environment, while striving for an appropriate level of cost."

KCS currently shares its cafeteria manager and a physics teacher with Schroon Lake Central School.

"In the future, it may prove to be more cost effective to increase this 'sharing philosophy' in other areas among local schools," Marlatt said.
