Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid Business Association, Lake Placid/Wilmington Connecting Youth and Communities Coalition and the Lake Placid Central School District have been meeting to discuss how to strengthen relationships between area teens and the community.

"We are very excited to introduce our new program "CU2" which will be launching this month, Tina Clark, CYC Coordinator We hope all LPCSD juniors and seniors participate."

The initiative was outlined by the CYC as follows:

Mission Statement: This program will improve the relationship with the teens in our community and engage them in the community in order for the community to grow. By nurturing this relationship we are planting the seeds for the future; a healthy and vibrant community.

The Problem: A recent survey shows a disconnect between the business community and local teens. 79 percent of students said their community did not notice when they did a good job. 59 percent of students said they do not feel the community is proud when they do well. 60 percent of students said their community does not encourage them to do their best.

These numbers are from the April 2012 Prevention Needs Assessment survey at the Lake Placid Central School.

Program goals: Build teen ambassadors for our community. Help teens discover the uniqueness and all the opportunities of this community for summer jobs, jobs after they graduate/college breaks and to grow roots here. Everyone, (businesses, families, teens) need to better understand the community and nourish it so that it can thrive. Better understand our teens and what teens are looking for in this community. Receive input from teens on how to improve community.

The Program: Presentation, April 25, classes during school day (Introduce program; Orientation, May 2, School Auditorium 2 to 3 p.m. (The influence of tourism in our community: customer service, delivering the experience; Personal Presentation and Sign up for Making the Connection) Making the Connection: May 13-27, (Teens visit the business they signed up for.) Wrap up Party: May 30, Mr. Mike's Pizza, 5:30 p.m. (pizza party for teens, businesses and parents to celebrate completion of program; Incentive prizes given to each teen participant; and awarding of Ambassador Award prizes.)
