Two open seats on Lake Placid school board

April 23, 2013
CHRIS MORRIS

LAKE PLACID - Voters will fill two open seats on the Lake Placid Central School District Board of Education on May 21.

The terms of John Hopkinson and Janet Smith expire this spring. Hopkinson will seek election to the seat he was appointed to last summer, while Smith will step down after 12 years on the board.

District Clerk Karen Angelopoulos said Hopkinson is so far the only person to express interest in running again. Both seats are three-year terms.

To run for the board, interested individuals must submit a petition with 25 qualified signatures 30 days prior to the budget vote. Those petitions must be submitted in person to Angelopoulos at the Administrative Services Center, 50 Cummings Road, Lake Placid.

A copy of the petition form will be available online at www.lpcsd.prg. They can also be picked up at Administrative Services Center.

Smith is currently finishing her fourth term on the board. She serves as vice president.

"I've been on the board for 12 years, and I just think it's time for a new person to take over," she told the News. "I think that's what community service is all about."

School board President Mary Dietrich said Smith has been a valuable asset to the school district.

"The district has been lucky to have someone of her caliber who is willing to serve as long as she's served," Dietrich said. "We'll miss her."

Smith said that when she first joined the board, she did so because she wanted to focus on student creativity, dedication, resourcefulness, the desire to learn and school spirit. She said the role of the board has shifted over time, with a greater emphasis on financial oversight.

Hopkinson joined the board last July after Gerald Blair resigned his position to become interim superintendent of the Northeastern Clinton Central School District.
