To the editor:
I was unpleasantly surprised at the news about the plans to close down the emergency department in Lake Placid. My memories are still vivid of Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, when I had a skiing accident and sustained a knee injury. I remember how painful it was and how promptly and professionally I was taken care of at the emergency department by Ms. Lisa Keegan and Mr. Mike Elio. I am immensely grateful for such care. After the X-rays, it was clear that I had a tibial plateau fracture that was stable enough to allow me to travel back home to Ottawa, where I underwent an operation.
As a tourist, I was fortunate to have the emergency department close to the skiing resort; otherwise I would have suffered longer.
Hereby, I would like to raise my voice against the planned closure of this facility. It is of paramount importance to tourists and residents of Lake Placid and it should continue to serve them in the future.
