It’s time to honor the top local volunteer

April 12, 2013
Lake Placid News

Nominations are now being taken for a prestigious local honor - the North Elba/Lake Placid's 2013 Distinguished Volunteer(s). It's an important duty to help select a local resident for this annual award, so if you know someone worthy - please take the time to make a nomination.

The best thing about the nomination process this year, is that it has been streamlined, and all you have to do is call a nomination in! All you have to do is call Sue Cameron at 518-523-2445 ext. 107.

Locally, the Distinguished Volunteer award was first given in 2007, but it dates back to 1974 when National Volunteer Week began as President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering.

This year, May 12 to18 as has been declared National Volunteer Week by both the town of North Elba and the village of Lake Placid. A celebration is scheduled on Saturday, May 18 with a tree planting ceremony in honor of all community volunteers followed by a ceremony and reception recognizing the 2013 Distinguished Volunteer(s).

The National Volunteer Week Committee is now accepting nominations from any individual or organization for this award, and nominations must be received by Wednesday, May 1. Any previous candidate who was not selected may be re-nominated.

Here is a list of previous winners:

2007: Annette Albright

2008: Vincent Forest

2009: Connie Cross

2010: Dennis Ryan

2011: Pat Jorgensen

2012: Keela Rogers

A Distinguished Volunteer award will be given in recognition of a lifetime of activity and effort on behalf of the town and/or village. Volunteers do not have to reside in North Elba/Lake Placid but the organization that they have been nominated for, and where they have performed their services, must be within the boundaries of North Elba. The committee will accept nominations for a separate youth category for those 18 years of age and younger. The same criteria will be used.

Any individual or organization may nominate a candidate(s). Remember to provide at least one contact in support of your nomination, and include name and number where support person can be reached.

One of our community's most valuable assets is its volunteers. So, if you care about our community, please nominate someone who is worthy of the award, and may not get any recognition besides this great honor. Don't let the chance go by to make a nomination - it's a great community-minded action.
