Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID - A small plane crashed into the summit of Nye Mountain in the High Peaks Wilderness at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Essex County Emergency Services Coordinator Don Jaquish said.

There were three men in the plane, and they were not injured, Jaquish said. After the crash, the men used a cell phone to call Essex County 911.

Forest rangers and members of the Lake Placid Fire Department were working together to rescue the men. As of 9:30 p.m., the rescue was still in process.

The plane was on its way to the Lake Placid Airport when it crashed.

Nye Mountain, south of Lake Placid, is known to hikers as one of the 46 Adirondack high peaks originally thought to be taller than 4,000 feet, although Nye is one of those that was later found to be lower than 4,000 feet.
