A community effort to be proud of

February 7, 2013
Lake Placid News

The Lake Placid community took a loss with the destruction of the building on Station Street that housed three businesses last week - but in that loss, the community can take away an appreciation of the place we live.

First, kudos to the volunteer fire departments and other emergency personnel who braved sub-zero temperatures to battle the blaze. And it wasn't just the Lake Placid Fire Department, it was the fire departments of the surrounding area as well - all answering the call of duty while most of us slept in the warmth of our homes.

These departments protect our community, and thanks to everyone who was out that night, either at the scene or at the station, trying their best to save the property at 263 Station St.

In the aftermath of that fire, Lake Placid Boatworks, Cake Placid and Rick's Taxi will have to find a way to begin again. And stepping up to help is the Lake Placid community.

By the time most readers see this page, the benefit at the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery will have ended. But that does not depreciate the level of commitment to this community by that establishment and all those who attended. For the record, the Pub scheduled a benefit on Thursday, Jan. 31 and plans to donate $2 from every pint sold to help the business owners who lost their property on that cold night.

But that's not all. There were many local businesses who stepped up to the plate and donated goods or services for a silent auction at that benefit - with all proceeds going to help the aforementioned businesses.

And the outpouring of support by this community will not end there. Dmitry Feld has announced a fundraising event will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13 during the next I Love Local Eats Cooking Series at the Shipman Youth Center - an event that Cake Placid has regularly donated desserts.

During the next few weeks, there may be other events aimed to help these businesses. Hopefully, they are well-attended.

Even in bad times, one must take a moment to reflect on the positive. In the case of a fire that destroyed, the power of community shines bright.

Thank you to all those who will attend and those who will contribute to any upcoming benefit. These community efforts are truly something to be proud of.
