LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid Speed Skating Club hosted its first speed skating meet of the season, the Lake Placid Golden Skates Marathon, Dec. 8-9 at the Olympic Oval.
Part of the Marathon Skating International Racing Series, the race was sponsored by local businesses Devitt Studios, Hunan Oshaka, Lake Placid Skate Shop and Peak Edge Performance. The weather cooperated, with temperatures in the 30s, on ice that was prepared well for racing by the ORDA oval staff.
Distances included 10 kilometers (25 laps), 21k (64 laps) and 42k (110 laps). The event put a new spin on the previous Lake Placid Ice Marathon by offering a unique award for the top three overall winners in male and female divisions - a gold, silver or bronze speed skate charm. Jack Devitt of Devitt Studios, a local jewelry design studio in Jay, made the award.
