Racing season set to begin at Oval

December 9, 2012
By CHRISTIE SAUSA - For The News , Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID - The Sheffield Olympic Speed Skating Oval opened for the 2012-2013 season on Saturday, Dec. 1. Four races are scheduled for the season, that include marathon, all-around and sprint distances.

A new race is being introduced with a familiar format. Part of the Marathon Skating International Racing Series, the Lake Placid Speed Skating Marathon has been a tradition for many years. Now, it has undergone a transformation to become a new, unique race called the Lake Placid Golden Skates Marathon.

Sponsored by local businesses Devitt Studios, Hunan Oshaka, Lake Placid Skate Shop, Lysek's Hillcrest Inn and Peak Edge Performance, the big difference between last year's race and this year's is the prizes offered. The overall winners in the male and female categories will win a 14-karat Golden Skate award, made by Jack Devitt at his workshop in Jay.

Skaters take off at the start of last year’s 40-kilometer Lake Placid Marathon at the Olympic Oval in Lake Placid. There will be four races this season that include marathon, all-around and sprint distances.

Medals will also be awarded for the top three placers in each gender age category.

There are also slight changes to the distances, reflecting traditional marathon racing distances. The 10-kilometer race will start on Friday night at 8 p.m., followed by the 21k race on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Sunday racing will start at 8 a.m. with the 42k distance.

"We are very excited about the new format and theme of the Lake Placid Golden Skates Marathon," said Linda Sausa, Lake Placid Speed Skating Club President and meet director. "It's only fitting that the oval where Eric Heiden won five gold medals will be hosting the Golden Skates Marathon."

The Lake Placid Golden Skates Marathon will be the first of the 2012-2013 Lake Placid Speed Skating Racing Series, and will be followed by the Jack Shea Sprints December 15-16. The Charles Jewtraw All Around is Jan. 5-6, and the series concludes with the Lake Placid All Around Feb. 16-17. The Lake Placid Speed Skating Club will officially sanction all races.
