John E. Lawrence

DANSVILLE - John E. Lawrence, 90, died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at his home in Springwater.

John was born on May 20, 1922, in Jordan, N.Y., the son of the late Hugh and Mary (Shants) Lawrence. He grew up in Lake Placid with his sister Christine, who died earlier this year.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Panama and Japan with the United States Army. At the end of the war, John completed his high school education and went on to complete Ranger School in Wanakena, where he graduated in 1948. He was a longtime employee of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. He was a conservationist and organic gardener. John was a member and past commander, and a member of the Honor Guard, for American Legion Post 326, Lake Placid. He was a longtime Boy Scout Leader and Scouting Board member. John was an active member of the Spring-Way Baptist Church, and after retiring, he traveled with his wife Betty, doing volunteer work with the Christian mission group SOWERS.

John married in 1949 in Lake Placid to Nancy Thew, who predeceased him in 1982. He was remarried in 1984 to Betty White, who survives him. He is survived by his children: Joel (Mary Kay) Lawrence of Lake Placid, Mary (William) Killebrew of Cincinnatus, Pamela (David) Lawrence-Cohen of Syracuse, Ellen (Ronald) Folts of Springwater, Carol (Greg) Guinta of Colo., and Kim (Andy) Sonderfan of Massachusetts; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; stepchildren Scott (Liz) White of Ohio, Nan (Jim) Porter of Rush, Sandra (Kevin) Klosser of Penfield and Charles (Vicki) White of Wellsville; 10 step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Spring-Way Baptist Church, 8997 Rt. 15, Wayland, NY 14572 or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY 10163. Arrangements are with the Sullivan Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 4 Perine St. in Dansville, NY 14437.
