LAKE PLACID - The death of 34-year-old Seth A. Kilburn has been ruled accidental.
Village police Chief Bill Moore said Tuesday that final autopsy results won't be official for several weeks, but a preliminary report found that Kilburn died of asphyxiation due to a fractured skull.
The autopsy was performed on Friday at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake by Dr. C. Francis Varga.
Police believe Kilburn lost his footing while walking on an unlit path between School Street and McKinley Street at about 1 a.m. Aug. 12. Moore said the area where he was found had steep grades that likely contributed to the fall.
Kilburn's parents, whom he lived with on Mill Pond Drive, reported him missing on Aug. 13, prompting a five-day search that included state police, the Essex County Sheriff's Department and the state Department of Environmental Conservation, as well as numerous community volunteers. His body was found Friday morning near a house on McKinley Street.
