Harrison continues hot streak at the VIC

PAUL SMITHS - The First Sunday Trail Race Series kicked off on July 1 with a 10-kilometer and a 5k race on the trails of the Paul Smith's VIC.

Matthew Harrison of Lake Placid won the 10k race with a time of 46 minutes, 13 seconds to beat out Chris Belair of Summerstown, Ontario, who finished in 46:41. It was the third VIC trail run win in a row for Harrison, who won the last year's season-ending half marathon and the Jenkins Mountain Scramble half marathon on May 26.

Jennifer Townsend of Canton was the top woman 10k runner, crossing the line in 57:25. Townsend was the fourth overall finisher in the race.

Ellen Campion of Saranac Lake wasn't far behind Townsend with a time of 58:19.

Royal McDonnell won the 5k race in 29:00. Patty Dowden (36:11) and Amanda Webster (37:27) were the only other 5k finishers.

There were 23 finishers in the 10k field. Harrison (20-29), Belair (30-39), Jerry Ross (60-69), Nathan Dowden (40-49) and Patrick Clarke (50-59) were age group winners on the men's side. Townsend (30-39), Campion (40-49), Amy Cole (20-29) and Marilyn Zygo (50-59) were winners on the women's side.

The First Sunday Trail Series is sponsored by Paul Smith's College, Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, High Peaks Cyclery and MAC's Canoe Livery. Runners earn points throughout the series for an overall prize at the end of the three-race series.

Next up in the series is a 15k and 5k on Aug. 5, followed by a marathon, half-marathon and 5k on Sept. 2. The VIC also offers monthly 5-kilometer fun runs on the third Wednesday of each summer month. For more information, call the VIC at 327-6241.
