Richards to be removed as Lake Placid school superintendent

June 25, 2012

LAKE PLACID - Lake Placid Central School District Superintendent Randy Richards will leave his position at the end of the next school year.

"Please be advised that I intend to leave the Lake Placid Central School District at the end of the 2012-13 School Year as the Board of Education indicated that they will not be renewing my contract," Richards said in a statement issued over the weekend.

The press release does not explain why Richards' contract wasn't renewed. School board President Phil Baumbach could not be reached for comment this morning, and messages left for Richards at his office were not immediately returned.

During the 2011-12 school year, Richards was at the center of several controversies. Last fall, former middle-high school Principal Katherine Mulderig filed a complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging Richards' engaged in gender discrimination against her, retaliated when she brought her concerns to the school board and created a hostile work environment for her. The EEOC later validated those complaints.

Richards admitted to and apologized for telling Mulderig he needed someone "bitchier" to manage the "bitchy" teachers at the Lake Placid Elementary school.

Mulderig has since accepted a settlement agreement and left her job. Assistant Principal Dan Mayberry has filled her role at the middle-high school, and the school board announced last week it will begin searching for a new principal.

Richards is also the target of an appeal filed with the commissioner of the state Education Department by Linda Wallace on April 30. The appeal seeks Richards' removal as superintendent and accuses him of "derogation of responsibility, neglect of duty and deliberate indifference."

Wallace said Richards mismanaged the budget process by providing "misleading, inaccurate and inflated figures" to voters in a press release distributed before the school budget vote.

The school board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district's Administrative Services Center, next to the middle-high school.
