LAKE PLACID - Richard Bonsignore, 96, died peacefully at home, on Thursday, May 24, 2012.

He was born in Brooklyn, on Aug. 8, 1915, to Henry C. and Gaetana Adamo Bonsignore and was raised in the Adirondack Mountains of Lake Placid with his younger sister and brother, Cornelia and Victor. He moved to San Diego at the end of World War II after serving as a Commander in the U.S. Navy.

Education and work were high priorities in Richard's life. He graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1933. In 1939, at the height of the Great Depression, he earned a B.S. in Accounting from New York University's School of Commerce. In 1944, he received a certification in Navy Industrial Accounting from Harvard University's Graduate School of Business Administration.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Commander in the Supply Corps from 1941 to 1947. He was awarded medals for American Defense, American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign and World War II Victory.

In addition to several shore assignments, Richard was the supply officer for the USS Pegasus AK-48 delivering munitions and restricted cargo throughout the Caribbean. A plaque on Mt. Soledad in La Jolla, Calif. commemorates his Naval service.

After moving to San Diego, Richard worked at General Dynamics from 1948 to 1964. He then transformed his interest in the stock market to a full-time career as a stock broker that continued until shortly before his death.

Family and friends were also very important to Richard. He particularly enjoyed fishing, skiing and traveling with loved ones.

Richard is survived by a sister, Cornelia of Lake Placid; daughters Cynthia and Diana; four grandchildren, and a great grandson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Victor Bonsignore, also of Lake Placid.

Tax deductible donations can be made in his memory to the Patient Program at the VA hospital in San Diego. This organization provides supplementary care to patients. Write checks to "VA Medical Center," and in the memo portion of the check, write, "GPF 1279 Memory of R. Bonsignore." Mail the check to: Patient Program, Voluntary Service, VA San Diego Health Care System, 3350 La Jolla Village Dr., San Diego, CA 92161.

A Celebration of Life was held at First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego on Saturday, June 2. A memorial service is planned at St. Eustace Church in Lake Placid at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 7.
