LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid man was killed when he crashed his motorcycle Monday evening in AuSable Forks.
Edward L. Brown, 60, was southbound on state Route 9N around 6:20 p.m. when he lost control of his 2003 Harley-Davidson "without warning," swerved and went off the west shoulder of the road, a witness later told Plattsburgh-based state police. The motorcycle entered a grassy field, and Brown was ejected from the bike.
Police said the witness ran to the scene and talked to Brown, who said he couldn't feel his legs and was having a hard time breathing. He then lost consciousness, police said.
Ambulance personnel from AuSable Forks responded to the scene and tried to revive Brown. He regained and lost consciousness several times before he stopped breathing and had no pulse, police said.
Brown was taken by ambulance to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center in Plattsburgh, where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Cody Smith. An autopsy performed Tuesday at CVPH determined Brown's cause of death was massive trauma to the chest wall, with fractures to his ribs, sternum and clavicle. Toxicology tests are still pending.
Police were still investigating what caused Brown to crash. A witness told police he had left Brookie's Pub in Keeseville and was traveling to Lake Placid when the accident occurred. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
