LAKE PLACID - Voters chose three new school board members over a single incumbent by a wide margin Tuesday in the Lake Placid Central School District.

The electorate also passed the proposed 2012-13 budget, with 524 voting yes and 301 no.

Patti Gallagher led the Board of Education election with 733 votes, and Mary Dietrich was close behind with 711. Martha Stahl won the third available seat with 537.

Joan Hallett Valentine followed distantly with 338 votes, losing her seat. The board appointed her last August after Camelia Sheridan, who had been elected that May, resigned due to an illness in her family.

Also Tuesday, voters approved spending for the Lake Placid Public Library and to buy two school buses.

Gallagher, Dietrich and Stahl had campaigned by strongly challenging the current board, including its defense of Superintendent Randy Richards, subject of a recent 600-name petition seeking his resignation.

The new members will replace Valentine as well as board members Cathy Johnston and Jill Cardinale Segger, who decided not to seek re-election.
