To the editor:
All students deserve the best education and the most positive learning environment. Since 1984 Mary Dietrich has been providing just that for the students of the Lake Placid Middle/High School. In addition to being an exemplary teacher, Mrs. Dietrich chaired the committee which thoroughly researched and carefully implemented the changes needed to develop the middle school. In doing so she demonstrated her gift for collaboration with students, teachers, administrators, and the board of education. Her commitment to best practices in education, achieved through shared decision making, led to the strengthening of a school which had always been a source of justifiable pride.
Mrs. Dietrich was a dedicated teacher of great integrity; she had an unwavering commitment to her students. Of all her contributions to their education, what I most vividly recall is the image of her in the LPHS auditorium at the piano accompanying students at concerts. In her spare time, completely apart from her teaching duties, she chose to be there for them, making certain that they had a chance to shine. That has always been her mission.
Upon retiring in 2007, Mary continued working behind the scenes of numerous student productions and, when needed, she's even appeared on stage. She is also the president of the Connecting Youth and Communities Coalition. She understands the power and the possibilities of tapping into the creative talents of young people.
Through the years she has enthusiastically invested so much of herself in our students and in our school; she remains as committed and positive as ever. I hope that you will join me and vote for Mary Dietrich for the Lake Placid School Board on May 15th.
