Make a change on school board

May 14, 2012
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

I want to express my thanks to the serving school board; Phil Baumbach, Janet Smith,Cathy Johnston, Joanie Valentine, Jerry Blair, Herb Stoerr, and Jill Cardinale.

These people have no ulterior motive to run for this thankless office except to see that our kids get the best possible education. They put in countless hours toward this end. They are responsible for personnel issues which legally they cannot discuss publically, administrative problems, union demands, budgets, bus routes, state mandates, repairs and maintenance, and countless other situations both large and small. We should all respect what they do even if we don't always agree with the outcome.

The people on the board are our friends and neighbors. They run businesses, have jobs, raise kids, serve on other community organizations and lead lives that have nothing to do with Lake Placid Central School. Yet they are willing to take on a task that most of us wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

For those looking for a change please consider Joanie Hallett Valentine as a choice. She was appointed to serve an unexpired term and has decided to run for her own term. She is a graduate of Lake Placid High School as are her daughters and she has run Tiny Tykes Day Care for 20 years. She's new and enthusiastic about serving on the board. I've known Joanie since she was a teenager and you'd be hard put to find a better candidate for the job.

When we vote on May 15th let's try to focus on the broad picture and not just the current controversy. That will be resolved one way or another and life will go on. The goal we should keep in mind is to provide the best education we can for our children to succeed in life.
