Araxie Dunn, age 95, of Lake Placid, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012. She was born in Persia, 1916, where her father General N. Azgapetian and her mother, Anne, were attached to the Armenian Medical Services during the First World War.
Raxie was a life-long resident of Lake Placid and a graduate of the Lake Placid High School. She loved the area and was a great Lake Placid supporter. She attended St. Lawrence University.
A businesswoman in Lake Placid, Raxie was active in many civic organizations. She held the position of Chairman of the North Country Community College Board of Directors, Chairman of the Lake Placid Planning Board and she was a Trustee on the Lake Placid Village Board and, also, Vice Chairman of the Essex County Republican Committee. She was also responsible for organizing the Lake Placid Main St. land owners into a Special Tax District, enabling the Village to purchase the land across from the NBT Bank for parking purposes.
Mrs. Dunn received the 1989 "Women of the Year" award from the Lake Placid Hall of Fame.
Mrs. Dunn and her husband, Gordon (deceased in 2001) built Crestview Plaza on Saranac Avenue in 1971 and have owned and operated Dunn Electric Co, The Gift Gallery and Heritage Hill Antiques.
Survivors include a daughter, Marcy of Lake Placid and a son Nevton of Cornwall, CT., two grandsons, Alec and Ian, and two nieces, Lia Azgapetian of West Linn, Oregon and Dalvorie Bowman of Washington DC, and three great grandchildren, Fiona, Ciaran and Cameron.
A private service will be held for immediate family only.
In her memory, the family suggests funds be donated to the Lake Placid Historical Society.
