WILMINGTON - A mild winter is causing Whiteface Mountain Ski Area to close earlier than normal this season.
The mountain will be closed during the week starting on Monday. It may, however, reopen the following weekend if conditions permit.
"We are going to close after Sunday and then reevaluate conditions mid week and look forward to the next weekend," Olympic Regional Development Authority spokesman Jon Lundin said. "It's supposed to cool next week. Maybe that will help us."

Lundin said on Wednesday there were 30 trails and about four chairlifts open.
Gore Mountain closed this past Sunday, with the possibility of opening this coming weekend, he said.
There are several events scheduled for upcoming weekends at Whiteface, including the annual pond skimming contest on April 1. Whether they happen will depend on the weather.
The overall number of skier visits was down this winter due to the warm weather and lack of natural snow at Whiteface. Still, Lundin said Whiteface and other ski resorts were able to compensate at times by making snow.
"The skiing was good," Lundin said. "If you had your snowmaking dialed in, the skiing was very good."
Last year, Whiteface was able to stay open until mid April, after receiving a significant amount of snow in the winter months.
