Riley chips in to help Clinton down NCCC

SARANAC LAKE - The Clinton Community College women's basketball team raced out to a big lead early and never looked back during a 74-54 victory over North Country Community College Tuesday, Feb. 14.

The visiting Cougars were never threatened, although the Saints did cut double-digit deficits to single points on several occasions.

Saranac Central graduate Jade Pellerin paced a balanced scoring attack for the winners, tossing in 19 points. Overall, four players reached double figures for Clinton, with Katrina Garrand scoring 18, Ruth Paul adding 13 and Schroon Lake's Ashley Whitty chipping in 10 points.

Saints sophomore guard Ayanda Ntombela, of Ithaca, led all scorers with a game-high 23 points. She was the lone player to hit in double figures for NCCC, which fell to 9-13 with the setback.

Justina Smith added nine points for the Saints and LaCandice Sanders chipped in eight points in the loss.

The Saints climbed back from deficits of more than 20 points in each half while closing the gap to as little as eight points, but the Cougars were able to regain the momentum with a quick transition game that produced numerous fast-break layups.

CCC held a 39-26 lead at halftime.

The victory gave the Cougars a two-game regular-season sweep over the Saints. In the first meeting between the teams on Nov. 15, Clinton claimed a 62-56 win over North Country in a tight contest.

The Saints wrap up the regular season at home this weekend in Saranac Lake. They take on Schenectady at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 and host Herkimer Sunday, Feb. 19 starting at 3 p.m. Both games will be part of doubleheaders with the NCCC mens team.

The Cougars improved to 17-5 with the victory and next play at home Thursday, Feb. 16 against Jefferson Community College.
