LAKE PLACID - Shirley Ann Harris, 70, passed away at her home in Lake Placid on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, after a brave battle with cancer. She was born in Lake Placid on April 1, 1941, the daughter of the late Edward (Ted) Cave and Caroline (Strock) Cave.
Shirley was a graduate of Lake Placid High School, Class of 1959. She worked as secretarial support at Greer Woody Crest Children's Home in Millbrook, N.Y. Most recently, she worked as payroll secretary for Adams Fairacre Farms in Poughkeepsie. Shirley retired from Adams in 2008, and returned to her family home in Lake Placid.
Shirley was a member of Lyall Memorial Federated Church in Millbrook and Adirondack Community Church in Lake Placid. Recently, Shirley spent time volunteering at Helping Hands Thrift Shop in Lake Placid. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Millbrook Fire Department during the 1970s and 1980s.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband John (Jack) Harris in 2000; her daughter, Charlene Harris in 1961; two brothers, Donald Cave in 2004 and Thomas Cave in 2007.
Shirley is survived by one son, Scott Harris and his wife Cathy of Sharon, Conn.; two daughters, Sheryle Harris of Fishkill and Lisa Baruffo and her husband Tom of Wingdale, N.Y.; her sister, Barbara Benway of Jay and her companion, Martin Peterson of Lake Placid. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Nicole Harris, Jessica Harris, Kayla Baruffo, Thomas Baruffo and Daniel Wing; great grandson Rhys Duncan and several nieces and nephews. Shirley's happiest times were when she was surrounded by her family and friends.
Calling hours were held Sunday, Jan. 22 at the M.B. Clark Inc. Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Adirondack Community Church in Lake Placid. Rev. John Martin, pastor, officiated. Burial followed at North Elba Cemetery.
