LAKE PLACID — Ardelle V. Sanderson, 95, formerly of Marcy Road, Lake Placid, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at Uihlein Living Center where she had been a resident since 2006.
She was born in Bound Brook, N.J. on April 12, 1916, the daughter of Henry and Inga (Gunnarsen) Kloss. She was the wife of Lloyd B. Sanderson. He predeceased her on Sept. 19, 1977.
Mrs. Sanderson was a member of the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame, the Lake Placid Hall of Fame and the Lake Placid Figure Skating Association. She had been a figure skating official since 1938 and had judged at every level, including the 1964 Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria. In 1961 she helped found the Lake Placid Sports Council, of which she was a lifetime member. In 1980 she served as figure skating chairwoman for the Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee.
She is survived by one son, Peter “Sandy” Sanderson and his wife Joanna of Brookfield, Conn.; two grandchildren, Christine S. Tragakis and her husband Chad of Alexandria, Va., and Elizabeth Evans and her husband Mark of Allentown, N.H.; and two great-grandchildren, Christopher P. Tragakis and Catherine H. Tragakis.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.
Donations in the memory of Ardelle Sanderson may be made to the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund in her memory. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.
