To the editor,
Referring to Osama bin Laden and John Demjanjuk, the headline of Frank Shatz’s column of May 27, “Symbols of evil,” might better have been “Products of their times.”
Bin Laden arose in answer to Soviet rule over Afghanistan. He turned his attention to the USA after Middle East Arabs had resisted, for years and without effect, Zionists who had driven most of the Palestinians from most of Palestine, and were mistreating many who remained — all this with American backing.
From the material in Shatz’s column, Demjanjuk was one guard of many. Mass-production evil needs so many people to do it that most of them are very ordinary, and at another time would lived uneventful lives.
