Biker, motorist tension a concern for town super

June 27, 2011
Lake Placid News
To the editor:

I am becoming increasingly concerned about the rising tension in the annual vehicle vs. bicycle confrontations. Being Town Supervisor and on the County Board of Supervisors I am well aware of the economic impact that these sporting events bring to the area.

However, we need to rein in out of control cyclists and drivers. I have personally witnessed on more than one occasion groups of cyclists stopped at intersections and blocking the highway. I have witnessed two and three abreast and when you give the horn a tap to let them know you are there, you are shown the universal sign of love.

On top of this, our roads are crumbling and there is no shoulder, much less a pothole filled roadway to ride on. I will be contacting the Essex County Sheriff and New York State Police to request that the rules of the road are enforced vigorously. This type of behavior needs to stop, and we need to take strict enforcement actions to prevent a tragedy, which is going to happen sooner rather than later.

I am a supporter of these sporting events and will continue to support these events, but some drastic measures need to take place to stop these practices.
