To the editor:
For the fourth year, more than 500 visitors and locals skated into the New Year on the speed skating oval in Lake Placid, and enjoyed hot chocolate, coffee, brownies and cookies. Over half attending were students, from grade school to college age, and they all skated for free.
I am grateful that more than $1,700 was raised for the Lake Placid Ecumenical food pantry.
Skate into the New Year began in 2008 as a charity event, and has become an annual tradition in Lake Placid. It is truly an event that brings out the best in our community; everything is donated, so that ALL proceeds are donated to our charity.
I am very grateful to the people who make this event a success every year.
I would like to thank my sponsors; the Kiwanis Club of Lake Placid, the Connecting Youth and Communities Coalition, the Olympic Regional Development Authority and Lake Placid Skate Shop. Special thanks to Lysek’s Hillcrest Inn for the delicious brownies, Ashley’s Cafe for the hot chocolate and coffee, and Price Chopper Manager Jim Black, Paul Zurlo and Freihofer’s Baking for their generous donations and support. I was also blessed with an excellent team to help make Skate into 2011 a success- Craig Dinsmore (ORDA), Joan Goldthwait, Linda Sausa, the Detwiler family, Phil Lalande and Linda Stanley.
Lastly, I would like to thank the skaters and community who continue to support this event and join us to skate into the new year. I look forward to skating into 2012 with you.
Happy New Year,
Skate into the New Year
