Defining a ‘local athlete’

January 3, 2011
Lake Placid News
To the editor:

With regard to the “local athlete’” press release that ran in the Dec. 3 issue of the Lake Placid News, it is important to note that the athletes mentioned are not a complete picture of the “Local Olympians” who

are competing this season. These athletes in the press release are ORDA-sponsored competitors. Hence it should be stated as such with a

change to “ORDA-sponsored Olympians.”

Local Olympians would include the likes of USA Luge team members Erin

Hamlin, who hails from the Utica area, but lives here virtually year-round for training, and won her World Championship in Lake Placid two seasons ago (and won a bronze medal in the first luge World Cup of the season); Chris Mazdzer, who hails from Saranac Lake; and Bengt and Ashley Walden (5th place on the same day), who are Lake Placid home

owners.

We are fans of the athletes mentioned in the release and wish them great success this season. But a release that extolls the results of the “local Olympian,” without mentioning those athletes not sponsored by ORDA, does an injustice to the accomplishments of each of them.

In fairness to ORDA, they issued a corrected press release, which apparently did not make the paper’s deadline. Nonetheless, we felt

compelled to comment.
