Baumbach, an eight-time Empire 8 Runner of the Week this year, finished the 6-kilometer course in a career-best 22 minutes, 31.60 seconds to improve her ranking on Ithaca’s all-time record list to seventh. She moved up the all-time record ladder at Ithaca throughout much of the season, improving her times each week as the season went on.
Baumbach was the top Ithaca runner at the 2009 NCAA championship meet with her 136th-place finish. Last year, she covered the course in 23:52.
As a freshman, Baumbach finished in 149th place, and was named the Empire 8 rookie of the year for her outstanding season.
This season, Baumbach collected several honors. In addition to eight Empire 8 runner of the week awards, she was also recognized with first team all-conference, all-state and all-region awards.
Baumbach earned her third-straight NCAA invitation after placing seventh at the Atlantic Region championships the previous week in Oneonta. She finished that 6-kilometer race in 22:38.90, moving her to ninth on Ithaca’s all-time career list.
Fifty-six runners from the regional meet were selected to race in Iowa for the nationals.
In 2009, Baumbach earned first-team all-Empire 8 honors during her sophomore season. She placed sixth overall at the Empire 8 Championship with a time of 19:04. She also earned third-team all-state honors at the NYSCTC Championship in Rochester, where she finished in 19th place with a time of 19:30.
Baumbach is a clinical science/physical therapy major and is also a member of Ithaca’s track and field team. She is the daughter of Phil and Laurie Baumbach of Lake Placid.
Ithaca junior Heidi Baumbach capped off a career season with a 114th-place finish in the Division III championships.
