LAKE PLACID — Less than a month away from the start of the 2010-11 season at Whiteface, the recognition from skiers and riders continues to roll in for Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid. The November 2010 issue of SnowEast Magazine, currently on newsstands, announced that a survey among more than 3,500 readers chose Whiteface as the East’s number one ski destination.

Whiteface was selected the favorite Eastern Resort by the magazine’s readers, while Lake Placid was tabbed the Favorite Destination Ski Village. In addition, Whiteface was also designated as having the Favorite Scenic View.

In October, Whiteface was named the number one ski resort in the eastern United States and second overall in eastern North America by SKI magazine.

“It’s so amazing to see that our hard work has been recognized by the guests,” said Bridget Hinman, marketing director for the mountain. “To see the skiers and riders all voting for us is heart-warming.”

According to Hinman the recent awards are a reflection of capital investments and hard work that have gone into the mountain.

“We’ve been working incredibly hard to give skiers and riders a better variety on the mountain,” Hinman said. “It’s things like opening up Lookout Mountain — adding a third peak was a huge thing for Whiteface, and I think we’re starting to see how much it’s appreciated.”

In the past decade Whiteface has invested in a gondola, chair lifts, parking, improved and increased snowmaking and grooming, terrain parks and upgrades to the base lodge. And just last season 25 additional acres of glade skiing were added with the opening of the Sugar Glade.

“We have so much to offer skiers,” Hinman said. “The mountain has improved a lot in recent years.”

With Lake Placid getting special mention as a the top ski destination, Hinman said the Olympic village is known internationally.

“I was just in London for a ski show and I couldn’t believe how many people know about Lake Placid,” she said. “People absolutely know about the Olympic heritage and the quaintness of the village.”

After blowing snow for the first time on Wednesday, Whiteface is scheduled to open for the season Friday, Nov. 26.

“There’s a buzz around the whole region about this upcoming season,” Hinman said. “I keep hearing things ... people talking, the Farmer’s Almanac ... it sounds like we’re going to have a great season for snow. I know I’m psyched.”
