After-school program provides a valuable service

Lake Placid News
To the editor,

Just in time for the new school year, the Lake Placid Child Care Committee, based out of the Lake Placid Elementary School is committed to providing an affordable, quality after school program for students in grades kindergarten to 5th grade.

The demand for supervised after school care is huge. More than 28 million school age children have parents who work outside the home Monday through Friday. As many as 15 million children go home without an adult to supervise them or to provide stimulating and safe activities.

Research shows that crime rates for juveniles triple between the hours of 3 to 8 p.m. with violent crimes peaking between 3pm and 4pm- the hour after the school bell rings. Children are also at a much greater risk of being the victim of a violent crime (murder, a violent sex offense, robbery, or assault) after the school day. This is due, in part, to the increasing number of our children going home to empty houses, while their parents work.

After school programs provide that needed alternative, while helping children with their studies in a safe and enriching environment. The Lake Placid Child Care Committee provides two and a half hours of supervised after school activities, including homework assistance, arts and crafts, stimulating field trips and diverse recreational experiences.

Studies show that programs like the LPCCC reduce dropout rates, improve attendance, boost academic achievement, improve self worth and promote leadership skills. We are proud to take a leadership role in the escalating after school movement, and are excited about the chance to provide our children with positive afternoon alternatives to the streets.

Currently we have 46 families signed to use our program. We would like to see that number increase but times are tough, sponsorships and donations are greatly appreciated.

For more information on how you can become a part of our program, please feel free to contact me at 524-2468.
