Mountain bike leaders thankful for grant money

Lake Placid News
To the editor:

On behalf of the mountain bike program at the Lake Placid Elementary School, we would like to thank the Uihlein-Ironman Sports Fund at Adirondack Community Trust for its generous grant of $1,500.

This grant will be applied toward the purchase of 21 mountain bikes for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at the Lake Placid Elementary School. Mr. Young, the Lake Placid Elementary School’s Physical Education teacher, will conduct a 3 week unit on mountain biking. His curriculum will focus on riding techniques, safety, etiquette, and basic maintenance.

The mountain bikes will also be accessible to the Lake Placid Outing Club, the After School program and the Shipman Youth Center. All funds generated for the entire mountain bike program have been obtained through grants.

Our hope is that this mountain biking experience through the Lake Placid Elementary School’s Physical Education program will inspire the kids to achieve healthy, active life styles for a life time. With the undeniable surge in mountain biking in our area, we feel this is a great opportunity for the kids to use our beautiful surroundings as a way to be fit and active – right out their back doors.

The Uihlein-Ironman Sports Fund at Adirondack Community Trust gives area youth and organizations a unique opportunity to reach their athletic goals through a wonderful grant program. This program awards grants to athletes who may need support in paying for equipment, travel and training costs.

Thank you,

Matt Young
