LAKE PLACID — The New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority’s annual Flaming Leaves Festival will take place at the Olympic Jumping Complex Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9 and 10.
Activities include live blues, barbecue, lawn games for kids and adults, a horseshoe tournament, tie-dye T-shirt making (bring your own shirt or buy one there), craft vendors and some of the country’s best ski jumpers flying off the 90-meter hill.
This year’s festival will also play host to the second event in the 2010 Art Devlin Cup series. Peter Frenette, 18, of Saranac Lake — the youngest and best-performing member of the U.S. ski jumping team in the 2010 Winter Olympics — enters the competition as the leader in the chase for the prestigious cup after winning the July 4 jump. He’ll face off against more of the country’s best jumpers during Saturday’s competition.
On Sunday, more jumpers will take to the air off the 90-meter hill during the New York Ski Educational Foundation event.
While people are taking in the jumping, music and the barbecue (food provided my Centerplate), they can check out the autumn colors from atop the 120-meter ski jump. A chairlift takes visitors to the base of the jump, while a 26-story elevator ride takes them to the top of the jump.
