To the editor:
One of the huge problems we face is that congressional districts are drawn to provide job security for incumbents rather than to represent distinct communities. The 20th Congressional District, for example, includes the North Elba portion of Saranac Lake and snakes its way down to the Hudson River Valley to include parts of Columbia County, including Rhinebeck, where Chelsea Clinton got married.
Rep. Scott Murphy (NY-20th) and other Blue Dog Democrats have recently proposed the Redistricting Transparency Act of 2010. This law would require that whoever is doing the redistricting solicit input from the public and, importantly, post the proposed plan and the rationale for the plan on the Internet at least 10 days before adoption and seven days afterwards. Please let Rep. Murphy know that you support this proposal.
