LAKE PLACID — Loretta L. Beaney, 86, died on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 at The Gorham House in Gorham, Maine surrounded by her family.
Born in Lake Placid on June 12, 1924 to Raymond and Lillian LaMoy, Loretta lived in her hometown for the next 70 years before moving to Scarborough, Maine to be near her son Jeff and his family.
Loretta graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1942. She and her husband Bill married on May 11, 1944 in Lake Placid, where they shared the next 50 years raising their family and working in the community.
Loretta is probably best remembered for her years as owner of The Knit Shop on Main Street, where many people not only learned to knit but also had an opportunity to share in her enthusiasm for the community. She was active in the youth hockey association and always available to lend a helping hand and encouraging advice. Her greatest pleasures came from knowing that she had helped others through challenging times.
Those who knew Loretta know that her family was a great source of pride to her. She is survived by her son Bruce and his wife Barbara of Long Island and their children Kim and Kristin; daughter Cathy Barkin and her husband Ken of Portland, Ore. and their daughters Jessica and Elena; son Bill and his wife Judy of Middlebury, Vt. and their children Brooke and Trevor; son Jeff and his wife Anne of Scarborough, Maine and their sons Brett, Travis and Connor; and brother Ray LaMoy and his wife Shirley of Lake Placid. Loretta also has four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Bill and two brothers, Robert and Richard.
A celebration of Loretta’s life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in Lake Placid on Sept. 25 at the Howard Johnson Restaurant.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Loretta’s memory can be made to Lake Placid Youth Hockey. Condolences and/or donations may be sent to Raymond LaMoy at 3 Placid Heights, Lake Placid NY 12946.
