LAKE PLACID — Elsie Bartholomew, formerly of Lake Placid, N.Y. died Wednesday, Aug. 4 at the Regency Retirement Village in Huntsville, Ala., where she had resided since January of 2008.
She was born on April 5, 1922 in Newell, S.D., the daughter of David and Alice Richards.
She married Wendell Bartholomew on Aug. 7, 1945.
Elsie graduated from Newell High School in 1939, the University of Northern Colorado in 1943, and did graduate work at SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh.
She was a dedicated educator who taught second grade at the Lake Placid Central School from 1963 until her retirement in 1979. She also taught in Lakewood, Colo.; Ludlow, Mass.; Strafford, Vt. and Wilmington, N.Y.
Elsie was very active in the Lake Placid community, where she and her family resided since 1955. She was especially active in the Adirondack Community Church, where she was a member of the vocal choir and bell choir and volunteered for many committees and functions. She and Wendell were members of the Craig Wood Golf Club, where they greatly enjoyed the company of their golfing friends.
She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, NYS Retired Teachers Association, United Teachers, the Garden Club of Lake Placid, and the Red Hatters.
She is survived by her two sons: David Bartholomew (Carol) of Peck Lake, Gloversville, and H. Bruce Bartholomew (Diane) of Huntsville, Ala.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband on Oct. 2, 1991 and her brothers: John and David.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3 at the Adirondack Community Church in Lake Placid. Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Adirondack Community Curch Stained Window Fund or other charity of your choice.
