To the editor:
On Saturday, April 24th, the Town of North Elba and the Village of Lake Placid celebrated National Volunteer Week. On that beautiful, sunny day in Peacock Park an Eastern White Pine was planted in honor of one of our most valued commodities: our community volunteers.
The ceremony closed as Ted Blazer and James McKenna took the shovels to backfill, and the Lake Placid High School Women’s Ensemble sang in glorious harmony as a fitting tribute to volunteers honoring their fellow volunteers.
Now in its fourth year, this celebration was envisioned as a way to recognize the dedication and time that the volunteers of this small community put forth. National Volunteer Week serves as the platform to illustrate the economic value and necessity of a community volunteer. And for organizations that wish to calculate that economic impact: assign a wage rate to each hour of volunteer activity, add benefits, calculate “out of pocket” expenses made by volunteers, then divide this by the average number of hours each volunteer works.
Think about this in the span between now and the next National Volunteer Week, April 23-30, 2011:
Every board member, fundraiser, tree planter, invitation stuffer, gate keeper, cupcake baker, Ironman volunteer, BBQ ticket taker, registration host, garden weeder, food server, World Cup event volunteer, usher, ski jump marker, village clean-up, rink monitor, school mentor, volunteer readers, church greeter and leaders, Kiwanas, Lions, Rotary, ambulance, fire department, raffle ticket sellers, bottle collectors, donor, supporter ...is a volunteer.
Thank you to all the supporters of this celebration: Adirondack Mountain Club, Adirondack Flying Service, Centerplate, Crowne Plaza, Desperados, Duncan’s Grille, Flowering Meadow Nursery, High Peaks Resort, Howard Johnson’s, Ironman, Lake Placid Center for the Arts, Lake Placid Flower & Gift, Lake Placid Horse Show Association, Lake Placid Tree Committee, Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, Lake Placid Wine & Spirit, Lake Placid CVB, Lake Placid Tree Committee, Lisa G’s, Mike Saulpaugh, Mirror Lake Inn, Northwoods Inn, Olympic Regional Development Authority, ORDA Store, Outpost Wine & Spirit, P3 Placid Vodka, Price Chopper, Station Street Wine & Liquor, Terry Robard’s Wine & Spirits, The Cottage, The Pines Inn, Tim Forman VP Community Investment Services, Town of North Elba, Uihlein Foundation/Heaven Hill Farm, Village of Lake Placid and Whiteface Club & Resort.
A sincere thank-you from the Volunteers of the National Volunteer Week Committee.
