LAKE PLACID — Susan A. “Tsu” Hansen, 65, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009 at Arbor Hospice, a remarkable woman with an intellectual curiosity about the world and all its wonders. She liked to learn how things work.

She was born in Detroit, Jan. 31, 1944 to William H and Olive (Flucker) Hansen. She grew up in Ann Arbor and graduated from Pioneer High.

After earning a degree in secondary education at Antioch College, she joined North Country School in Lake Placid as math teacher and houseparent. She taught for 12 years, earned an MBA from RIT and moved into the office as business manager. She retired in 2004 and returned to Ann Arbor to be with her family after her cancer diagnosis.

Tsu enjoyed horseback riding, sailing (Lake Huron, Hudson River and Atlantic Ocean), skiing, curling, bowling and especially golf with her team at Craig Woods Golf Club in Lake Placid.

In arts and crafts, she was adept at ceramics, glass blowing, etching, stone carving, watercolor, leather, beading, block prining, batik, silk screening, quilting, weaving, tapestry, dyeing, spinning fleece, knitting and crocheting.

In college, she and a roommate camped throughout the Western U.S. She toured England with another friend. She also visited Scotland, Guatemala, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and the Panama Canal. She spent many happy summer vacations at the family cottage in MacGregor Bay, Ontario.

Tsu was an avid reader and puzzle solver and enjoyed music, flowers and animals, especially the companionship and comfort of her dogs, Boss, Molly and Cruiser.

Many thanks to her loyal friends, particularly Jean and Jerry, Pat, Sandy, Ann, Glenna, Betty, Selden and Hock, Tony and Nansy, John and Bonnie, Don and Nick. Also, Tsu’s compassionate caregivers Kristin, Diane and Pam.

She is survived by her devoted mother, her dear brother and sister-in-law Peter and Marie, and wonderful niece, Lisa.

Tsu was predeceased by her father Bill, her grandparents and an uncle.

She met her medical problems stoically with dignity and still maintained a sense of humor. Cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time.

Donations may be made to the Sue Hansen Fund North Country School and Camp Treetops, P.O. Box 187, Lake Placid, NY 12946 or to the Huron Valley Humane Society, Ann Arbor.
