LAKE PLACID — Bernard Walter Adler, 87, of Grand View Avenue, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009 in Lake Placid.
Bernie was a successful businessman, effective civic leader and was universally liked in this small mountain village he called home for the past 63 years.
Bernie was an original member of the Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee and a member of the committee’s Marketing and Television Committee and Finance and Administration Committee.
Bernie and his wife, Irene, owned and operated two Main Street businesses, the Swiss Shop and the United World shop. He was a former president of the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce, past member of the Lake Placid Sports Council, member of the Lake Placid Kiwanis Club and a member of the Lake Placid Hall of Fame.
Bernard was born in the small German town of Constance near the Swiss border and came to the United States in 1936 at the age of 14. A chance vacation in Lake Placid in 1945 so reminded him of his home in Germany and Switzerland that he returned in 1946 and opened a small jewelry shop in the Hotel Marcy. He had been a moving force in the community since.
Bernie is survived by his wife of 67 years, Irene Osso Adler; a brother, Jerry Adler; three sons and their wives: Lawrence and Eva Adler, Mark and Debora Adler, and Jon and Rachel Adler; six grandchildren: Emily Adler Friedman and her husband Daniel Friedman, Paul Adler and his wife Jenya Adler, Eric, Matthew, Sami and Marissa Adler; and two great-grandchildren: Sophia Rose Friedman and Caleb Friedman.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Bernie be made to the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service, PO Box 107, Lake Placid, NY 12946 and the Tri-Lakes Humane Society, 255 George LaPan Highway, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.
