LAKE PLACID — Hapkido is a Korean-based system of self-defense that was founded in 1945 by Choi Yong-Sul. Hapkido, literally translated, means “combine or unite internal power, energy and force through a system, method, or ‘way.’” Combat hapkido was founded in 1992 by Grand Master John Pellegrini of Chandler, Ariz. Based on traditional hapkido, it is an eclectic approach to a comprehensive and modern system of self-defense. Combat hapkido is about self defense in the street. It helps people to develop confidence in their ability to remain safe in a variety of compromising situations. Adults, teens, men and women all take part in combat hapkido. Dick O’Leary and Karl Zaunbrecher were recently promoted to third degree black belt in combat hapkido. They regularly train at the Lake Placid Martial Arts Academy. O’Leary, a business owner in Lake Placid, began his training in combat hapkido approximately seven years ago. He resides in L.P. with his family and trains and teaches at the Lake Placid Martial Arts Academy. He demonstrated proficiency in empty hand joint locking, weapons disarms, strikes, kicks and ground defense, as well as respect and dedication. Zaunbrecher, a veterinarian in Saranac Lake, was also tested during the session. Zaunbrecher demonstrated his ability to defend against grabs, kicks, punches and chokes, as well as knife and ground attacks. He has been training for approximately seven years in combat hapkido and also trains in shorin ryu karate. — Robert Schiller is a martial arts instructor for these and other students at Lake Placid Martial Arts Academy.
