Marsicano represents LP Speed Skating Club on the world stage

POSTED: November 14, 2009

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Despite its rich Olympic history, Lake Placid hasn’t had a Lake Placid Speed Skating Club member go to the Olympic Games for speed skating since Jeannie Ashworth in the 1960s, and of course Jack Shea in 1932.     This could change with new Lake Placid Speed Skating Club member Trevor Marsicano, who is poised to represent Lake Placid and the United States at the upcoming 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada this February.

On Saturday and Sunday, Marsicano competed in the World Cup team and Olympic  Qualifiers in Milwaukee, Wis.. The races determined who would go on to compete on the World Cup tour, and eventually the Olympic Trials in December.

Originally from Ballston Spa, Marsicano grew up playing hockey. Eventually he switched to speed skating, first short track, and then long track in 2004. Short track is the form of speed skating that is similar to roller derby and can be skated on a hockey rink, while long track is skated on a 400-meter oval. In 2004, he came to Lake Placid to add long track skating to his repertoire.                 After recovering from a nearly fatal short track injury in 2004, and skating in the 2006 short track Olympic Trials, Marsicano switched to long track. The move proved to be a good one, as he has been consistently medaling against the top skaters in the world, including last year’s world single distance championships where he placed in the top three in several events. In one race, Marsicano nearly set a new world record before it was smashed about a half hour later by teammate Shani Davis.

Now it seems like there is nowhere to go but up for Marsicano. After a slow start in the 500 meters with an eighth-place finish, he rebounded with a third place in the 1,500 and a second in 1,000. Overall Marsicano placed third.

“I was happy with how I skated,” Marsicano said. “My goal was to make the world team, which I did.”            He qualified for the World Team in the 1,000, 1,500 and team pursuit events.             By making the squad, Marsicano will be competing in World Cups over the next few months, helping to secure Olympic spots for the U.S. Team, and finally in Olympic Qualifiers in Calgary and Salt Lake City in December.

As always, Marsicano never forgets his roots, and looks forward to represent Lake Placid on the world stage.

“It is exciting to be a Lake Placid Speed Skating Club member heading into the Olympics. Because Lake Placid is literally where my long track career started. If it wasn’t for Lake Placid, I wouldn’t be here.”
