You will be seeing a community spirit campaign, “I Shop Local” in the coming months in both our newspapers. Starting Sept. 1 through Oct. 31 you will see signs in the windows of area businesses and ads in the paper reminding us all to shop locally. More than 50 businesses in the Tri-Lakes area are participating in the campaign, which includes a weekly give-a-way of $25 and a grand prize of $1,000. Cards will be given and when stamped three times, it goes in the entry box for the drawings of the prize money.
Let us say it doesn’t mean you can’t shop elsewhere, it just means try local first because it only benefits you when you spend money in the town where you live. We understand it isn’t always possible to find the right item, at the right price, at the right time, but check around here and you will be surprised what is offered and what you will find.
Why should we shop locally?
¯The local businesses contribute so much to our communities. If our businesses shrink because we didn’t patronize them, then we would have to make up the loss in taxes ourselves.
¯The numerous fundraisers that the local businesses are extremely generous with deserve our support.
¯The jobs that local businesses generate for us provide a living for us and our families, and are dependent on the economic survival of our communities.
¯It is always greener and healthier when you can buy food at some of the local farmers’ markets during the summer.
¯Consider the gas, not to mention precious time that you will save by shopping locally.
We can only help ourselves by helping them and our communities. It’s a win-win for all.
