Ann A. MacLenathen

    LAKE PLACID — Ann A. MacLenathen, 79, of Lake Placid, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 after a brief stay at Uihlein Mercy Center.

    She was born Feb. 14, 1930 in Lake Placid, the daughter of Paul and Margaret (Finch) MacLenathen.

    After her father’s passing when Ann was 3 years old, she was raised by her mother, her aunt Martha Finch, and her grandparents Sarah and Henry Finch, in Jay and Lake Placid.

    Ann graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1948 and was granted a B.S. degree from Cornell University in 1952. In 1955, she obtained an executive secretarial diploma from Wood School in New York City. In 1972, she earned a M.A. degree in English and American literature from the College of St. Rose in Albany.

    After graduating from Cornell, Ann worked as a dietitian at the University of Delaware. From 1957 to 1975, she was an associate professor at Albany Business College. After returning to Lake Placid in 1975, she taught at North Country Community College and was the secretary at the rectory at St. Agnes Church for 15 years until retiring in 1995. During that time she also worked planning and arranging trips for senior citizens. Ann volunteered with the St. Agnes Cemetery Association, reorganizing cemetery records and drawing maps of the cemetery.

    Ann traveled extensively in North America and also took trips to Europe and Hong Kong. She was an avid reader and accomplished seamstress, and she owned and loved several cats over her lifetime.

    She is survived by several cousins, including Mary Saulpaugh Lalonde of Florida, Michael Saulpaugh of Lake Placid and Margaret Drobnik of Plattsburgh; and very close friends Celest and Stephen Krieg, Deborah, Andre and Pierre d’Avignon, a very close friend Elaine Andrews, and a former student David.

    Funeral services were held at noon on Thursday, Aug. 6 at the Uihlein Mercy Center Chapel with the Rev. Patrick O’Reilly officiating. Burial followed at the St. Agnes Cemetery.

    The Clark Funeral Home was in care of arrangements.
