LAKE?PLACID?— This past year was a whirlwind for young ice dancers Madison Chock and Greg Zuerlein.

After winning both of their Junior Grand Prix events in Italy and Great Britain, they qualified for the Junior Grand Prix Final and won.

The most impressive accomplishments came after, however, when they won the US Junior title and became World Junior Champions in February.

When Chock and Zuerlein started skating, at ages 5 and 4 respectively, they were probably unaware that they would one day be World Junior Champion Ice Dancers.

Only skating together since 2006, they are preparing to make the leap to the senior level, the highest level in the US Figure Skating ranking system.

It is the senior level skaters that represent the US at the Olympics every four years, and at the World Championships.

The excellence that Chock and Zuerlein display on the ice is a result of dedicated training. The team practices four to five hours a day Monday through Friday, with weekends off. Approximately three times a week, they take part in off-ice training.

When they are not skating, Chock and Zuerlein are much like other young adults —  they enjoy relaxing, spending time with friends, and staying active with various sports.

They also like watching another ice sport, hockey, and enjoy baseball and soccer as well. Both of them enjoy wakeboarding with their coach on days off.

After skating, Chock would like to become involved in fashion design and marketing, while Zuerlein looks forward to staying involved in skating as a coach and eventually having a family.

For now, though, their accomplishments and future goals keep them pressing towards a higher level of achievement. Both say that their favorite skating memory was winning Jr Worlds this year in Bulgaria, and the reminder of this moment helps them to keep training hard.

Their goals for this year are to perform at their highest level yet, and “make their parents proud.”

No strangers to Lake Placid — they have competed here five times at the Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships in August — Chock and Zuerlein will be back twice in the 2009-2010 season.

Watch for this promising team at the Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships and at Skate America in November.
