MIDLAND PARK, N.J. — Helena T. (nee Tancik) Deeks, 89 of Ridgewood and formerly of Lake Placid and Midland Park, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Born in New York City, she grew up in Czechoslovakia, and returned to the United States in 1934. She graduated from the Columbia College School of Nursing in 1940.
After her graduation, she married Arthur J. Deeks, Sr. in 1941 and thereafter moved to Lake Placid. While residing there, she served as president of the Girls Scout Council of Lake Placid.
In 1954, the family moved to Midland Park, N.J., where they lived for 40 years. During that time, she was active in the Democratic Party Organization and worked as a health home companion. In 1998, she moved to Ridgewood.
She is survived by her sons: Arthur and his wife Shirley of Lewes, Dela. and Jonathan of Franklin, N.C.; six grandchildren: Sean and Jason, Morgan, Diana Kessler (nee Deeks), Jeremy and Laura; and four great-grandchildren: Zachary, Joslin, Teah and Sylvie.
She was predeceased by her husband Arthur in 1974 and her son Martin G. Deeks in 2003.
The family held a gathering of friends on Tuesday, May 26 at the Olthuis Funeral Home, 159 Godwin Ave., Midland Park, N.J. A private cremation was held.
