TICONDEROGA—Florence Marie Blanchard, 91, formerly of Long Island, Ticonderoga and Saranac Lake, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at the Adirondack Medical Center-Uihlein in Lake Placid.
Born in Corona, Queens, she was the daughter of the late John and Mae (Hlavac) Jirinec.
Florence was educated in the New York City school system and later moved to Long Island, where she worked as a secretary and office manager for various businesses.
She married Richard F. Blanchard. His job gave them the advantage of traveling and living in many countries, including French Morocco, where their son Richard C. was born, and Spain, where they resided for many years. They were well known for their love of music and dancing, and entertained often for family and friends, both in Europe and the U.S. Florence’s talents as an artist and gourmet cook and sense of humor laid the groundwork for many elegant and memorable parties.
Florence and Richard retired to Ticonderoga, where she lived on the grounds of Fort Ticonderoga until Richard’s death. Florence later moved to Saranac Lake, and in 2005 moved to Lake Placid Uihlein, where she was well known by the staff, nurses aids and many children who visited Uihlein for her lighthearted outlook on life and her unusual sense of humor.
Survivors include three children: Susan L. Bologna and her husband Vincent of Centerport; Melissa M. Neems and her husband Harold of Wilmington, N.C.; and Richard C. Blanchard of West Hollywood, Calif.; three grandchildren: Justin Neems, Meredith Neems and Maxwell Blanchard; and several nieces and nephews, including Connie Blanchard of Ticonderoga and her children, John Blanchard, Tom Blanchard, Mary Griffin and Paul Joseph Blanchard.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1988; her brother, John Jirinec; and one nephew, Paul Blanchard.
Relatives and friends may call Saturday, March 21, 2009 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga.
A funeral service will follow at noon at the Funeral Home. The Rev. Marjorie Floor, Pastor of the Episcopal Church of the Cross of Ticonderoga, will officiate. Interment will take place at the family plot of St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery of Ticonderoga.
Memorial services are scheduled for a later date in Lake Placid.
