LAKE ORION, Mich. — Marie E. (Leis) Pearce, 95, died Feb. 1, 2009 in the home of her loving daughter, Margaret, surrounded by family.
Marie E. Pearce was born Mary Elizabeth Leis on May 18, 1913 in Saranac Lake, daughter of Henry P. Leis and Mary (Disco) Leis.
Marie was a graduate of Barnard College and Columbia Teachers College in New York and the Yale College of Nursing in New Haven, Conn. She lived in the Sutton Place district of Manhattan after becoming a registered nurse, where she provided public health services to persons in need.
During World War II, she met Paul C. Pearce, a soldier stationed at Governor’s Island. They were married on Sept. 9, 1944 and returned to Paul’s home state of Michigan, where they raised a family in the community of Thomas. They later moved to Oxford, where they resided until Paul’s death in 1997.
Marie was an avid genealogist and did considerable work in tracing her family history. She also wrote a book about her father, Henry P. Leis, “The Man from Saranac Lake.”
Marie is survived by her children: Dr. Stephen Lee Pearce of New Orleans, La., Margaret Camarata and her husband Frank of Jacksonville, Fla., Elizabeth Anne Morrill and her husband Tracey of Groveton, N.H. and Michael J. Pearce Esq. and his wife Madelyn, of Phoenix, Ariz.; her grandchildren: Thomas and Kevin Mann of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a great granddaughter, Shelby.
A Mass will be held for Marie at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 at St. Joseph’s Church on Lapeer Road in Lake Orion, Mich.
