LAKE PLACID — George A. Beattie, 82, of Newman Road in Lake Placid, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
Born Dec. 6, 1925 in Au Sable Forks, he was the son of Frank and Mamie (Cobb) Beattie. George married Frances Snow Oct. 18, 1945 at St. Eustace Episcopal Church.
He was a graduate of Au Sable Forks High School. George was mostly a farmer throughout his life, and also worked for the Lake Placid Club, the state Department of Transportation and the North Elba park district, and was caretaker for the Historical John Brown Farm and Grave. He worked for the village highway department for 25 years and retired in 1988.
George was an exempt member of the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Lake Placid Masonic Lodge No. 0834, and of the Lake Placid Fish and Game Club. George was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
George is survived by his sister Ruth Senecal of Lake Placid; his daughter Catherine Boyer and her husband Richard of Lake Placid; his granddaughter Jennifer Mihill and her husband Jeremy of Lake Placid; his great-granddaughter Jocelyn Mihill and his great-grandson Jarrett Mihill, both of Lake Placid; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Frances on March 29, 1996.
Calling hours were held Wednesday, Dec. 3 at the M.B. Clark Funeral Home. A Masonic Prayer Service was also held, followed by a Fireman’s Prayer Service. A time of reflection followed. Cremation and burial will take place at the convenience of the family at the Pine View Crematory.
The family suggests donations in memory of George be made to High Peaks Hospice or North Country Life Flight.
