LATHAM — Dale Everett Garwood, 55, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital with his loving family at his side.

Born in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Donn G.G. Garwood and the late Lorraine O. Garwood.

Dale moved to Albany in 1972 and worked for Verizon Corporation for 30 years before his retirement in 2002. He was the first male telephone operator in the Tri-City area when he first began his tenure with the phone company, where he also met his wife Mary.

Dale was a past member of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department and was a life member of the S.W. Pitts Hose Inc. of Latham. Dale served as captain, lieutenant, vice president, president, member and chairman of the board of directors and member of the board of trustees during his 25 years of service to the department. He most enjoyed being a fire truck driver and helping others who wanted to learn about his passion for the fire service. Dale also was a member of FASNY, the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York. Sharing his passion for the fire service, his son, Joshua Garwood, is also a dedicated member of the S.W. Pitts Hose Company Inc., where he has served as a captain, lieutenant, EMS coordinator and chief of the Explorer Post.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary; his son Joshua of Latham; his daughter Megghan (Daniel) Holz of Albany; his sisters: Bethany (Greg) Pelkey of Keene Valley and Judith Sochia of Canandaigua; and his nieces and nephews: Lindsay (Joshua) Tupia of Adams, Landon, Dana and Erin Pelkey of Keene Valley and Lauren, Tommy and Kevin Sochia of Spencerport.

Dale’s goal throughout his illness was to be at his daughter’s wedding. Megghan married Daniel Holz of Albany on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 in the Hubbard Interfaith Sanctuary at the College of St. Rose.

Dale and his family wish to thank Charlie Friedlander and the Center for Family Practices for their extraordinary efforts. We would also like to acknowledge and thank our dear friends and family for their love, care and unwavering support.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 25 at Bowen Funeral Home in Latham.

In recognition for the gentle and compassionate care provided to Dale, the family suggests memorial contributions to Community Hospice of Albany, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
