Secrets of life and death
When I was a young girl, I spent time in Northern Ireland as a foreign exchange student. To this day, I often look back and reflect upon the wisdom so freely bestowed upon me during my sojourn in Bangor, County Down. There, people were happy to share the benefit of their experience, and it is a gift I still treasure.
Well I recall the grandfather of my exchange “sister,” Penny. Sometimes the whole family, scaling three generations, would repair to the neighborhood pub, and there Granddad MeNeeley, who I now suddenly notice had an awful lot of e’s in his name, and who was about 100 that summer, would hold forth on various topics that had special significance for the times, or at least to him. On one occasion the topic was his old friend Lliam Jones, who had recently passed away.
